The "Forbes" Magazine has composed a list of the European Cathedrals that are surely worth visiting:
Chartres Cathedral - is one the most famous sights of the Chartres, situated in 96 kilometers to the south-east to Paris. It is considered one of the most beautiful Gothic buildings and is built in the 12-th century.
The Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence, Italy. From the architectural point of view very interesting are the dome and the external wall coating with marble panels of various green and pink tints. It is built in the XIII-XV venturies.
Roskilde Cathedral, Denmark. It is the first Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia, built from bricks. It is used as the mausoleum for the Danish Royal family.
Seville Cathedral, Spain. It is the third large Christian Cathedral in the world - after the St. Peter Cathedral in Rome and St. Paul in London and the biggest one from the Gothic ones. Christopher Columbus' tomb is situated here.
Strasbourg Cathedral, France. During more that 200 years has been the tallest building in the world. It belongs to the largest cathedrals in the European architectural history and the largest sandstone constructions. It unites the German and French cultural influences. It is built in XII-XV centuries.
St Vitus's Cathedral, Czech Republic. The largest cathedral in Prague. Here the crownings of the Czech Kings and Queens took place. It is built in XIV-XX centuries.
Durham Cathedral, England. Built in the period from 1093 till 1130. Is located at the Durham peninsula in England.
Notre Dame, France. Is situated at the Cite island at the place of the former first Christian church of Paris, the basilica of the St. Stefan. Built in XII-XIII centuries.
It would seem strange, but the list does not include the Vatican St. Peter basilica (the main Catholicism temple), The St. Paul Cathedral in London, the Parisian Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart) Cathedral, St. Stefan Cathedral in Vienna, the Cathedrals of Ulm and Cologne, the St. Mark Cathedral in Venice and the Sagrada Familia (Holy Family) Cathedral in Barcelona.
